In surgery, the procedure to transfer an organ from its normal place in the body to the skin surface. It may be temporary or permanent. A common example is when the intestine is brought to the abdominal surface as a COLOSTOMY: this may be permanent because of serious disease in the lower part of the COLON, or temporary to allow a disorder in the colon to be treated.
