A contagious disease due to infection with a variety of ENTEROVIRUSES. Most common in children, the incubation period is 3–5 days. The disease is characterised by an eruption of blisters on the palms and feet (often the toes), and in the mouth. No treatment is needed. The disease has no connection with foot and mouth disease in cattle, deer, pigs and sheep. While the disease is normally harmless, an epidemic in China between 2007 and 2012 led to 7 million recorded cases and over 2,500 deaths.
