Also known as shin splints. A condition characterised by pain over the inner border of the shin, which occurs mostly in runners, and sometimes in joggers. It is caused by muscular swelling resulting in partial obstruction of local blood flow. The disorder may be the result of compartment syndrome (build-up of pressure in the muscles), TENDINITIS, muscle or bone inflammation, or damage to the muscle. It usually disappears within a few weeks, responding to rest and PHYSIOTHERAPY. In some cases, however, it becomes chronic and so severe that it occurs even at rest. If the cause is the compartment syndrome, relief is usually obtained by a simple operation to relieve the pressure in the affected muscles.
