A doctor who specialises in the treatment of cancers (see CANCER; ONCOLOGY). Increasingly, cancer is being treated by multidisciplinary teams which include surgeons, physicians, radiotherapists, oncologists and nurses. Clinical oncologists concentrate mainly on RADIOTHERAPY treatments; medical oncologists are trained in the medical management of cancer patients – diagnosing and classifying cancers and arranging drug, psychosocial and palliative care. With the constant evolution of cancer care and the introduction of new treatments such as GENE THERAPY, the role of oncologists and their relation with other specialists dealing with cancer will also evolve. But the strategic aim will remain to provide patients with up-to-date, comprehensive, coordinated care in hospitals and the community.
