A type of streptococcal bacterium (see STREPTOCOCCUS) which can cause otitis media (see EAR, DISEASES OF – Diseases of the middle ear), TONSILLITIS, PNEUMONIA, MENINGITIS and SEPTICAEMIA. It is usually sensitive to PENICILLIN. The routine immunisation schedule seeks to protect infants and children from pneumococcal meningitis and septicaemia.
