Professional staff working in health care are registered with and regulated by several statutory bodies: doctors by the GENERAL MEDICAL COUNCIL (GMC); dentists by the GENERAL DENTAL COUNCIL; nurses and midwives by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (see NURSING); and PHARMACISTS by the GENERAL PHARMACEUTICAL COUNCIL. Other such bodies are the GENERAL OSTEOPATHIC COUNCIL, GENERAL CHIROPRACTIC COUNCIL and the HEALTH & CARE PROFESSIONS COUNCIL which regulates seventeen groups: arts therapists, biomedical scientists, chiropodists/podiatrists, clinical scientists, dietitians, hearing aid practitioners, nutritionists, occupational therapists, operating department practitioners, orthoptists, paramedics, physiotherapists, practitioner psychologists, prosthetists and orthotists, radiographers, social workers and speech & language therapists The Professional Standards Authority (PSA) answerable to Parliament, oversees all these regulators to the extent that it reviews their fitness to practise cases, checks how they carry out their functions, advises Ministers and influences national policy.
