Breakdown of SKELETAL MUSCLE fibres leading to release of proteins such as MYOGLOBIN which can result in kidney failure. Causes include: CRUSH SYNDROME following major trauma; genetic muscle diseases; extremes of body temperature, such as in frostbite or MALIGNANT HYPERTHERMIA; severe exertion, such as marathon running or calisthenics; severe dehydration; and side-effects from drugs including cocaine, amphetamines, statins or heroin.
