An antibiotic derived from Streptomyces mediterranei, rifampicin is a key component in the treatment of TUBERCULOSIS. Like ISONIAZID, it should always be included unless there is a specific contraindication. It is also valuable in the treatment of BRUCELLOSIS, LEGIONNAIRE'S DISEASE, serious staphylococcal (see STAPHYLOCOCCUS) infections and LEPROSY. It is also given to contacts of certain forms of childhood MENINGITIS.
Rifampicin should be avoided during pregnancy and breast feeding, may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives and extra caution should be applied if there is renal impairment, JAUNDICE or PORPHYRIAS.
