A fever of the typhus group (see TYPHUS FEVER). It received its name from the fact that it was first reported in the Rocky Mountain States of the United States; these are still the most heavily infected areas, but the fever is now found in all parts of the US. The causative organism is Rickettsia rickettsi, which is transmitted to humans by tics.
