Now referred to simply as SEPSIS this is a serious condition caused by the body's immune reaction to the presence of micro-organisms in the bloodstream. A very high temperature may be the only sign, but there is often associated shivering (RIGOR), profuse sweating and pains in the joints and muscles. If the condition is not brought to a halt by the early use of high-dose antibiotics and intravenous fluids SEPTIC SHOCK may supervene and the patient's life put at risk. Any infected area of the body may progress to septicaemia if inadequately treated.
