An acronym for S-T Elevation Myocardial Infarction, used to describe death of heart muscle as a result of coronary artery disease in which there is the typical ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY changes of a raised area between the S and T waves. It is distinguished from non-STEMI myocardial infarction, in which the ECG may be normal and the diagnosis is based on the blood level of TROPONIN (see HEART, DISEASES OF – coronary thrombosis).
