Sickness induced by any form of transport, whether by sea, air, motor-car or train. (See also MOTION (TRAVEL) SICKNESS.)
Also called Aden gut, Aztec two-step, Basra belly, Delhi belly, Gippy tummy, Hong Kong dog, Montezuma's revenge, Tokyo trots and turista, this is caused by a variety of micro-organisms, either viruses such as Rotavirus, bacteria such as E. coli or protozoa such as giardia. Obvious preventive measures include avoiding salads, unpeeled fruit and ice cream, and never drinking unboiled or unbottled water (and always checking that the seal on bottles is intact). If diarrhoea occurs, co-phenotrope and loperamide are often used to reduce the frequency of bowel movements in adults. Prophylactic antibacterial drugs are rarely advised.
