A method devised for use in people with TUBERCULOSIS whose lifestyle is such that they cannot be relied upon to comply with their prescribed treatment regime, for example vagrants or homeless persons. There is a major risk both for the individual concerned and society generally as not completing a course of treatment for TB leads to the emergence of resistant organisms, some of which are now resistant to all standard therapy. With DOT, a trained health professional, or a lay person whom they supervise, provides the medication and watches the patient swallow it.
