The cutting of tissue to separate the structural components for identification or removal during an operation or the study of anatomy.

Dissection of an artery occurs when the inner part of its wall tears and separates from the deeper structures, allowing blood to track through the space created and leading to blockage of the origins of smaller arteries and often leading to vessel rupture (see also ARTERIES; ANEURYSM).
