The migration of charged particles between electrodes. A simple method of electrophoresis, known as paper electrophoresis, is used in hospital laboratories to analyse PROTEINS in body fluids. It consists of applying the protein-containing solution as a spot or a streak to a strip of filter paper which has been soaked in buffer solution and across the ends of which an electrical potential difference is applied for some hours. Comparison is made between filter strips of normal fluids and that of the patient under investigation to identify and quantify blood proteins.
