PEPTIDES produced in the brain which have a pain-relieving action; hence their alternative name of opiate peptides. Their name is derived from endogenous MORPHINE. Immediately after severe injury, when it might be expected that people would experience severe pain, there may be an interval during which they are able to continue functioning as though the injury were not present. This is thought to be due to the release of endorphins.
