A method of relieving the symptoms of certain types of VERTIGO by putting a patient's head and body through a series of positions over about 3 minutes in order to displace debris responsible for the symptoms from the semicircular canals into the utricle, which is insensitive (see Ear – Internal Ear). With the person seated upright, their head is turned to the affected side; they are then reclined beyond horizontal keeping the head turned and held for 30 seconds; the head is then turned to the opposite side and held for the same time; the patient is then rolled over onto the opposite side to the affected ear so they are now looking towards the floor and held for a further 30 seconds; finally they are sat upright with the head still turned to one side, then the patient turns his head to the midline with his chin on his chest and waits 30 seconds. The manoeuvre is frequently successful but cannot be done if the person has carotid artery stenosis, unstable heart disease, severe neck disease or advanced rheumatoid arthritis.
