Selective Mutism

An apparent refusal to speak, more common in children and often associated with a psychologically traumatic event having occurred. ‘Selective’ is used when the child is mute only in certain environments, for example at school whereas he or she might speak normally at home. The term ‘elective’ mutism is also used to imply that the person has chosen not to speak. (see also VOICE AND SPEECH).
